The threat of air pollution is driving a push for the Green New Deal, aimed at achieving revolutionary changes in how society relies on fossil fuels. (Image from https://www.timesnownews.com/health/article/air-pollution-can-make-us-more-prone-to-develop-dementia/287393)

Climate
scientists recently issued a stern warning that unless we make revolutionary
changes to the way our economy relies on fossil fuels in the next 10 years,
then in 20 years, the planet will become very hostile to human life. The Green
New Deal aims to be the catalyst for this revolution. Thankfully, the
scientists who issued the warning say the technology exists to address the
problems, however, convincing politicians to embrace change is something else
entirely.

The Green New
Deal aims to make grand changes to the economy much like its predecessor. Its
basic message is this: we can either continue on as we are, being satisfied
with our current economy and the damage we cause, or, we can make a change and
have a hospitable planet. “Both” is not an option.

Breaking things down to the most basic level, in this Green New Deal, we will
shift to a low-carbon economy, make clean air and water human rights, restore
the American landscape, and make urban life more sustainable.

The Green New Deal aims to bring building and passenger vehicle emissions down to zero by 2030, and remove fossil fuels from aviation, rail transit, and heavy-duty vehicles by 2050. It will invest in infrastructure to improve air and water quality. The Green New Deal will even work to create sustainable living practices in urban and suburban areas, and restore 40 million acres of public and private land by 2035.

To make the program work, a massive investment in new green jobs will be required. Included in the Green New Deal is the proposal to create 10 million new green jobs. Simply put: a commitment to saving the planet by the people will create new green jobs. The question is whether or not the people are ready to dive in and make a change.
