Energy storage startup Highview Power has signed a deal with Spanish engineering, procurement and construction firm TSK to co-develop long duration systems using Highview’s cryogenic solutions.

The new joint venture is called Highview TSK. The partners will work together to develop projects in Spain, the Middle East and South Africa. The projects could add several gigawatt hours of energy storage capacity by 2022.

“This partnership with TSK will help Highview Power accelerate momentum for our cryogenic energy storage systems in global markets and is ideal for applications like renewable energy shifting, enabling wind and solar for baseload generation, and hybridizing cryogenic storage plants with traditional thermal generation systems,” Javier Cavada, CEO of Highview Power, said in a statement.

As detailed in a December 2018 Power Engineering story,

London-based Highview has developed a long-duration energy storage process using liquid air technology. Air is turned into liquid by cooling it to nearly minus-200 degrees Celsius (minus-320F), stored and then ultimate re-gasifies and expands to drive a turbine and create electricity.

The company has launched two grid-scale liquid air energy storage projects in the UK. The first plant was commissioned in 2014 in Slough, Greater London, with a capacity of 2.5 MWh, while last year, the world’s largest liquid air energy storage plant was inaugurated in Bury, Greater Manchester, with a capacity of 15 MWh.

Madrid-based TSK has constructed more than 20 GW of generation projects across 35 countries including solar, wind, biomass and energy storage. Combined, the Highview TSK team will have more than 1,000 engineers and project managers to execute long-duration energy storage projects in its target markets, from their offices in Gijón, Madrid, Cologne, London and New York.
