No, the headline is not clickbait — floating
cities are really a thing. In fact, they are already in development.

URBAN POWER, an architecture and planning
firm, has designed nine man-made islands located off of the southern coast of
Copenhagen. The goal is to stay in front of challenges that may arise in the
city due to its growing population. Named Holmene, these islands will create
opportunities for tech space, fossil-free energy production, flood barriers,
and will even include public recreation space.

According to those involved, developing over
the sea has plenty of advantages, including creating thematic developments that
will create the best conditions in an industry such as green tech, biotech, and
life science, each of which would, in turn, create numerous green jobs. For
these industries in particular, being in buildings located over the water
provides unique potential.

Already being hailed as ‘Europe’s Silicon
Valley,” Holmene is expected to create 12,000 jobs, many of which will indeed
be green jobs, with the ability to accommodate 380 different businesses. With
the green technologies already committed, including heat storage and windmills,
plus Europe’s largest waste-to-energy plan, Holmene will reduce a minimum of 70
tons of CO2 each year while producing more than 300 MWh of fossil-free, clean
energy.

Holmene is far from the first manufactured
island but will be unique in that it intends to house green technology,
specifically. While creating jobs and energy, the project will also create
natural flood barriers as well as a diverse, protective landscape along both
the new and existing coastlines which can then be used for sports and
activities.

As for the when — construction is set to begin
in 2022, with completion projected at 2040. For the latest in green jobs news
and trends, keep checking in here to the blog.
