Contrary to popular belief, the health of the environment is something that many Americans actually take very seriously. According to a 2017 Pew Research Center survey, 55% of Americans ranked the environment as a top policy issue that President Donald Trump and Congress should tackle. Although many people care about the health of our environment, a good amount do not know how to preserve it efficiently. Since Easter is only a few weeks away and millions of Americans celebrate it each year, here are some tips on how to celebrate Easter while also being environmentally conscious. In this article, I will be discussing four things that you should be doing in order to truly have a “green” Easter.

Use Natural and Organic Dyes

One of the most popular Easter activities that occur each year in many American households is the coloring of eggs. When most people dye their eggs, they usually use store bought dyes or food coloring. However, these types of dyes are not natural and have a negative impact on the environment due to the ingredients used to make them. If you really want to “go green” this Easter, you should look for alternative dyes. There are many different alternatives that you can choose from that are environmentally friendly, but I would suggest using fruits. Fruits, such as raspberries and blueberries, are the perfect substitutes because they are natural and organic. Not only will using fruits for your dyes help preserve the environment, but it also saves you money because it is a common fruit in a lot of households. Even if you don’t have fruit in your home, purchasing them from the store is much cheaper than purchasing dyes. Using natural and organic dyes is definitely something you should be doing in order to truly have a “green” Easter.

Provide
Environmentally Friendly Treats

Another common occurrence at many Easter festivities is the handing out of treats to kids. When you are deciding on which treats to give the children at your Easter celebration this year, consider making your own, or buying organic ones. Doing so will reduce packaging and pollution. In addition, try to not use or buy any refined white sugar products because many of them are made at plants that damage the environment. Miniature muffins, dried pineapple, and a wide variety of nuts are all treats that many kids enjoy and are environmentally friendly as well.

Carpool

As stated
previously, millions of Americans celebrate Easter each year with their
families in one location. This means that millions of Americans every Easter
Sunday will be traveling to a family member’s home. When you are traveling, do
your best to carpool with other family members so that you can reduce
pollution. Since you are all going to the same place, it makes sense that you try
to use as little cars as possible. If everyone carpooled with family members to
their Easter celebrations as opposed to driving themselves, it would have an
enormous impact on our environment.

Use
Environmentally Friendly Decor

Just like any other holiday, the hanging of decorations is also something that occurs on Easter. Unfortunately, many common Easter decorations contain plastic, and plastic is one of the worst materials for the environment. Plastic is so harmful to the environment because it cannot biodegrade, and it releases harmful chemicals into the atmosphere the soil. Therefore, it’s recommended you make sure that you purchase decorations that don’t contain any plastic whatsoever. Instead, you can use decorations that you already have available to you at your home. Some of the things that you can use instead are potted herbs or branches from your own backyard. Using these as a substitute for plastic not only helps the environment, but it also helps your wallet.

In summary, the
environment is something that every person should care about. Since so many
people in America celebrate Easter each year and over half of them actually do
care about the environment, it is important for everyone to understand how to
truly have a “green” Easter. As long as you follow the four tips in
this article, you will be doing your part to help preserve the environment.
