People rely on their computers for everything, but that doesn’t mean they’ll last forever. Sometimes you might need a new laptop or desktop because your hardware ages or gets damaged. Learn how to recycle computers in an environmentally friendly way so you don’t accidentally hurt the planet during your upgrade.

There are a few ways to recycle computers that avoid contributing to local landfills. Cut back on your household waste by using these tips to get rid of outdated computers and help the environment simultaneously.

1. Find a Donation Site

Computers are an integral part of modern life, but not everyone can afford them. Many organizations accept donations if you haven’t damaged your computer beyond use or repair. It could help a child participate in virtual classes during a time when half of U.S. students enrolled in online schools. Visit a local repair shop for a quick inspection if you’re unsure about your computer’s usability before donating.

2. Visit a Pawn Shop

Pawnshops are the ultimate resource to recycle computers in an environmentally friendly way. You could sell your laptop or desktop for quick cash and make it available for an affordable price. You might also use it as collateral in exchange for a 30-day loan to make your upgrade possible. Either way, you’ll avoid dumping your computer in a landfill and increasing your carbon footprint.

3. Take It Apart

You might need a replacement computer if your screen cracked or the case broke, but that doesn’t mean every part belongs in the trash. Take your computer apart and sell the pieces that still work. Many people build custom PCs that need CPUs and RAM sticks. Make a few dollars on reusable parts after wiping your computer of personal data to protect your privacy.

4. Create an External Hard Drive

New computers come with hard drives but hold onto the one from your old model. You could turn it into an external drive to save pictures and other data off the web. External hard drives don’t charge monthly fees for cloud storage, so it’s a great solution if you have tons of data you’d like to keep. It’s another opportunity to recycle your computer in an environmentally friendly way and gain storage space for all of your pictures, documents, and family videos.

5. Make a DIY Air Purifier

It’s always a good idea to breathe cleaner air, especially when you’re at home. Your house should be a safe place that supports your health, but your air quality might not be as great as you think. Your old computer parts can help you make a DIY air purifier that sits on your desk and removes odors.

Tinker around with the fans, a voltage booster, and a charcoal filter to clean your workspace without sprays or solutions. The purifier will make your home smell better and keep you healthier even during the height of flu season.

Recycle Computers to Help the Environment

Adding to local landfill waste hurts the planet. Use these tips to recycle computers in an environmentally friendly way so you don’t have to worry about your carbon footprint when you get a newer laptop or desktop setup.
