Going green is a great way to help the planet. You can start by making minor renovations to your house. Consider updating your home with eco-friendly technology. This will also increase your property’s resale value. Here are 10 ways you can incorporate green technology into your home!

1.  Invest in Smart Devices

When adding new technology to your home, upgrade to Energy-Star-rated appliances. These increase the energy efficiency of your home by about 10% compared to other devices. When updating your kitchen, look for refrigerators with the Energy Star label. The newer appliances will also be an attractive feature to potential buyers.

Also, consider purchasing a smart thermostat. These automatically adjust to your desired heating and cooling preferences. They also turn off when you’re not home and kick on right before you return. Smart thermostats maximize energy use and save you money on your bills.

Here are some other smart devices to consider adding to your home:

  • Smoke detectors
  • Power strips
  • Locks
  • Lightbulbs
  • Speakers

2.  Add Low-Flow Toilets and Showerheads

We use an average of 82 gallons of water per person per day. Some of this comes from flushing toilets and taking showers. Low-flow toilets use half the amount of water per flush. They can account for 25%-65% of your total water savings.

When looking for a low-flow showerhead, there are two main types: aerating and laminar flow. Aerating showerheads create a misty spray by mixing water and air. Laminar showerheads form an individual stream of water. The latter is better for more humid climates because they produce less steam and moisture.

3. Use a Water Filtration System

This system will allow your family to enjoy cleaner water. It also helps the environment by reducing the use of plastic bottles. Many plastic bottles end up in the ocean and negatively impact marine life. Having a home water filtration system is also a selling point for potential buyers.

4. Buy Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless heaters automatically heat the water as it flows through the system. This can help conserve water and decrease the amount of heat loss. Tankless water heaters last longer and cost less to maintain, too, and they also have easily replaceable parts.

5.  Consider Your Landscape

Having a properly maintained lawn increases your home’s curb appeal. Consider making your landscape environmentally friendly as well. Add water-wise native plants to your garden. These will help conserve water, and they require little maintenance.

Having an easy-to-care-for yard is an attractive feature for busy homeowners. You could also add a drip irrigation system to maximize your water efficiency further.

6. Add Roof Solar Panels

Having solar panels allows you to use natural energy from the sun to power your home. This lowers the greenhouse gases emitted into the air. Solar panels also help reduce air pollution and decrease climate change.

Having these panels can also increase the value of your home. Some buyers may be willing to pay more for homes that have solar energy already installed. The National Bureau of economic research found that buyers would pay 3% to 4% more for homes with solar power.

7. Geothermal Heat Pump

This system takes heat from below the earth’s surface and transfers it into your home. It also takes heat from your home and transports it back underground. Geothermal pumps don’t burn fossil fuels, so they emit less carbon dioxide.

8. Wind Turbines

Wind turbines are another natural source of energy. Using a wind turbine can reduce the generation of fossil fuels and lower air pollution. Wind turbines are best in more rural areas with fewer obstructions. It should be the tallest feature so the blades can spin around safely.

To install a wind turbine yourself, you will need first to dig a 9-foot hole and trench. Then assemble your monopole, making sure it is secure.

 9. Install Insulation

To make your home more energy-efficient, make sure it is properly insulated. Consider insulating your attic or basement first. Having adequate insulation evenly heats your home, conserving energy.

Also, seal openings in your windows and doors to prevent air from escaping your home. Adding low-E window panes can maximize your energy efficiency even more.

10. Use a Micro Hydropower System

These systems convert flowing water into electricity. Micro hydropower systems help the planet by using a renewable energy source. They typically include a waterwheel or turbine, a generator, and a water conveyance mechanism.

How to Make Your Home More Environmentally Friendly

Adding green technology makes a positive impact on the environment. It also increases your home value. Before you sell your home, consider adding some of these devices.
