MEDIA ADVISORY: UN Food Systems Summit

Commitments Registry

WHAT: Governments, organisations, partnerships and individuals can now formally submit their commitments to building healthier, more sustainable and more equitable food systems ahead of the UN Food Systems Summit on September 23.

The registry will be public to all but commitments are expected from institutions or collective commitments which are multi-stakeholder or multi-country.

An official commitment registry, which is public, will take on commitments from institutions or multi-stakeholder/multi-country aligned to five priorities for action to have emerged from the Summit process:

  • Nourish All People;
  • Boost Nature-Based Solutions of Production;
  • Advance Equitable Livelihoods, Decent Work, & Empowered Communities;
  • Build Resilience to Vulnerabilities, Shocks, and Stresses;
  • Support the Means of Implementation.

WHEN: The Commitment Registry is now live as of Tuesday, September 7 and will remain open until the Summit.

WHERE: The Commitment Registry will be hosted on the Food Systems Summit Communities site and includes easy-to-use guidelines and a forthcoming FAQ.

WHO: UN Member States and other interested parties including producers, youth, civil society, private sector, Indigenous Peoples, faith communities and many others will be able to register their collective or institutional commitments to action on the registry.

WHY: The Secretary-General’s Food Systems Summit has engaged hundreds of thousands of people from around the world and across all constituencies over the last 18 months to accelerate action that transforms food systems to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. A growing registry of National Pathways for Food Systems Transformation that are clear visions of what governments, together with different stakeholders, expect of food systems by 2030 can be found here. Regional Pathways for Food Systems Transformation are being developed to address areas of common focus and priority across multiple countries. At the global level, the Summit process has given rise to multi-stakeholder initiatives that key actors will be ready to commit to by the Summit, to support Member States in delivering on national pathways and achieving the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development more broadly.

About the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit

The UN Food Systems Summit was announced by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, on World Food Day last October as a part of the Decade of Action for delivery on the SDGs by 2030. The aim of the Summit is to deliver progress on all 17 of the SDGs through a food systems approach, leveraging the interconnectedness of food systems to global challenges such as hunger, climate change, poverty and inequality.
