Media Advisory | The UN’s Science, Technology and Innovation Forum marks 10 years of bridging frontier knowledge and policy for sustainable development

WHAT: The 10th Multi-stakeholder Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for the Sustainable Development Goals (2025 STI Forum)

World leaders will join pioneering scientists, innovators, academia, civil society, private sector, and young people to discuss the power of science, technology and innovation to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

From mental health platforms for refugees in Türkiye to biodegradable sanitary products tackling period poverty in Kenya, innovators from around the globe will join this year’s Forum to demonstrate their solutions and how science, technology, and innovation are driving tangible impacts across the SDGs.

The Forum will also give special attention to the SDGs under review at the 2025 High-level Political Forum, namely SDG 3 (Good health and well-being), SDG 5 (Gender equality), SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth), SDG 14 (Life below water) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The STI Forum will be preceded by an Action Day as well as by a Special Meeting of the Economic and Social Council on Artificial Intelligence (AI) on 6 May. Side events will be held from 6 to 8 May.

  • Juan M. Lavista Ferres, Vice President and Chief Data Scientist of the AI for Good Lab, Microsoft
  • Muhammadou M.O. Kah, Chair, UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development
  • Carlos Henrique Brito Cruz OBE,Senior Vice-President, Research Networks, Elsevier
  • Joyeeta Gupta, Professor of Environment and Development, Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences, University of Amsterdam and Professor on Sustainability, IHE Delft Institute for Water Education

BACKGROUND:
Since 2016, the Forum has become the UN’s principal hub for bridging science and policy, showcasing innovative solutions – ranging from solar-powered health diagnostics to AI for sustainable agriculture. Convened under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), this year’s Forum’s theme focuses on ‘Advancing sustainable, inclusive, and evidence-based, science and technology solutions and innovations for the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs for leaving no one behind.’

The two-day Forum preparations are led by the two Co-chairs H.E. Mr. Omar Hilale, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the UN and H.E. Ms. Elina Kalkku, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Finland to the UN, supported by the UN interagency task team on STI for the SDGs (IATT) and the 10-Member Group of High-Level Representatives appointed by the Secretary-General.
