The ocean is essential to life on Earth. It is the lungs of the planet, and home to over a million species. More than three billion people depend on it for their livelihoods. But the ocean is under threat from climate change, pollution and overfishing.
The 2025 UN Ocean Conference taking place in Nice, France, from 9 to 13 June, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica, aims to catalyze urgent action to conserve and sustainably use the ocean, seas and marine resources.
The Conference will bring together Member States, specialized agencies, civil society and the private sector to mobilize action. It is expected to adopt an intergovernmentally negotiated political declaration which will be, along with a registry of voluntary commitments from across sectors, referred to as the Nice Ocean Action Plan.
