All of us know that geothermal energy is used for heating, but cooling? Yes, it is also used for cooling as well. Both heating and cooling are provided with the help of ground temperatures which remain constant.

It is such an eco-friendly source of providing energy with which you would end up saving almost 30% of the electricity bill you are currently paying while you are using this source of energy for heating and cooling. It might be a problem for someone who’s not ready to invest a big amount initially because its purchase and installation costs are a bit on the expensive side. However, once purchased and installed, it will give you benefits in the long term.

Now talking about how the heat is generated when the heating system is in use. Generally, there are three methods that can help you with the system-

1. Ground heat pump

There is a huge difference in the temperature above and below the surface. Accordingly, it takes advantage of this difference to produce heat. However, the interesting part is, they require very less electricity and in return, they generate 5 times the energy.

2. Direct use of Geothermal System

In this case, underground water is heated and can be easily pumped, and can be used for varied applications like geysers or hot springs. One disadvantage which comes with the direct use of geothermal energy is that this is only limited to areas where there are sources of hot water present naturally.

3. Enhanced Geothermal System

These are the kind of system that puts water in the ground from one end and get hot water from another end. These systems are mostly used when a lot of hot water is required and are used by large-scale industries.

Now, let us put some light on the geothermal cooling system. All of us have that Conventional Air Conditioner in our houses but never thought of buying geothermal heating and cooling. It will result in a reduction in the electricity bill during times of extreme heat. Listed below are a few benefits that can be looked into while considering a Geothermal cooling system:

Cost

The initial installation and purchase cost of geothermal heating and cooling might seem like a bit too much, but on the other hand, the monthly bill you are going to pay will be much less which is a long-term benefit for you. Your geothermal Air Conditioner starts paying for itself after a few years of its installation.

Lifespan

Most of us have Conventional Air Conditioners installed in our houses, and the maximum they could have lasted is for 10 years. However, if you opt for Geothermal heating and cooling, it will last almost a span of 30 years. In fact, sometimes the number can be increased to 50 years as well.

Noise

While the typical Conventional Air Conditioners are very noisy, this is not the case with geothermal air conditioners, which tend to do their work very quietly because their work involves taking the hot air from the environment and putting that into that Cooling system.

Final Overview

Basically, a geothermal source of energy provides both the heating and cooling. Also, while you are using geothermal for heating and cooling, you are also protecting the environment by using renewable sources of energy. It is offering you enormous benefits in return for its purchase and installation cost. The operational changes are also very less. So, if you are planning to buy any conventional source for heating and cooling, then geothermal might be considered a good alternative for you if you also want to save on the cost.
