One of the more popular “green” jobs growing across the country is within the cannabis industry, as more and more states continue to legalize marijuana.

However, while most would assume that cannabis is an environmentally friendly crop to produce, the reality is that much cannabis cultivation is done indoors in greenhouses that use a lot of energy on lighting and climate control. However, some cannabis farmers are taking efforts to reduce their environmental impact.

Sustainable efforts within the industry include the use of LED lighting and water reclamation systems. Facilities are also often pesticide-free. LED lighting not only reduces electricity costs for the growers, but also helps them to reduce their energy consumption from the power grid. UV lighting can also be used to help sterilize the air and assist with water recapture.

Others have begun to harness the power of the wind to reduce their environmental impact, another measure that helps the companies save money while using alternative energy.

Many resources can be recycled to help grow the cannabis. Reusing water that has been gathering in dehumidifiers or air conditioners reduces water use. Others are using reusable packaging to help keep their products and waste out of landfills.

The most eco-conscious growers are using closed-loop systems, which is a method of production that takes water and other nutrients and treats them so they can be recycled and used in the same growing system over and over. This conserves natural resources and lowers operating costs.

Companies taking these steps are helping a green industry get more evergreen, while creating green jobs that will be attractive to the most eco-conscious workers. Stay tuned here for the latest on the cannabis industry as well as other green jobs news.
