With immense challenges facing the world, the Global Investors for Sustainable Development (GISD) Alliance to join UN Secretary-General in scaling up finance for the SDGs

What:

Financing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will cost trillions of dollars per year and cannot be met from public resources alone.  30 business giants will meet at the UN Headquarters in New York on 12 October for the Fourth Annual Meeting of the GISD Alliance to highlight advances and key deliverables that are being implemented to better align private finance to the SDGs.

Established by the UN Secretary-General in October 2019, the GISD Alliance — heads of leading banks, pension groups, investment funds and other financial sector corporations worldwide — seeks to find solutions to scale up private finance and long-term investment for the SDGs, the blueprint for a more resilient and inclusive world.

The Annual Meeting is being held as the world experiences huge shocks to the global economy, with severe consequences for the most vulnerable countries and marginalized groups. In this rapidly evolving global environment, the work of the GISD Alliance has become more critical than ever as we seek new approaches to scale up private finance and investment for the SDGs.

Co-Chairs Ms. Leila Fourie (CEO of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange) and Mr. José Viñals (Group Chairman of Standard Chartered), together with UN Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development, Mr. Navid Hanif, will brief the media on the outcomes of the Annual Meeting at the Spokesperson’s Daily Briefing.

WHO:

  • Leila Fourie, CEO, Johannesburg Stock Exchange, GISD Alliance Co-Chair
  • José Viñals, Group Chairman, Standard Chartered, GISD Alliance Co-Chair
  • Navid Hanif, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development, UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs

WHEN:

  • Wednesday, 12 October 2022, 12:30 pm EDT

WHERE:

  • Press briefing room, S-237; Livestreamed at un.org
