Ways To Make Your Home Go Green

Go green. It seems like no matter where you go or what you read, everyone’s focus is on how we can protect the environment. Without a doubt, this is important but when it comes to a starting point, a lot of homeowners aren’t sure what they can do.

Whether you’re building a new home or simply doing renovations, there are things you can do to go green. Read on to learn how you can make your home a little greener.

Invest in a Smart Thermostat

When it comes to using energy, your heater is one of the top contenders. In fact, one of the most common reasons we use too much power is through our HVAC units, especially during the winter months.

During the cold weather, many homeowners have a tendency to leave their heaters on for long periods of time, which can lead to over-the-top utility bills. One of the best ways to have a green home is to install a smart thermostat. Smart thermostats come with hardware that allow it to turn itself on and off during set times of the day.

Basically, this means that homeowners won’t have to worry about constantly leaving their heat on when its not needed.

Replace Your Light Bulbs

Another way to have a greener home is to replace your old light bulbs with ones that are energy efficient. Old, traditional light bulbs are filled with a gas known as argon. Argon is a dangerous gas if its released. Breathing in argon is not safe for the environment as it can cause many health issues such as vomiting, dizziness and vertigo.

Switching to energy efficient light bulbs not only keeps you in good health, it also cuts back on power usage. And with less power being used, the less you have to pay on your utility bills.

Insulate Your Home

Adding insulation is often the go-to way to boost the eco-friendliness of a home. Insulation is when the heat flow is significantly reduced, but the home maintains the desired temperature without using a lot of power. With the right insulation, your home can hold heat for hours. In addition, there are many ways to add insulation to your home.

Here is a brief list of ways you can insulate your home:

– Insulation Batts – These are pieces of either rock wool or fiberglass and can be placed anywhere in your home such as your walls, floors and ceilings.

– Spray Foam Insulation – Spray foam insulation is simply using a bottle of sprayable latex to fill in any small, cracks, gaps and crevices. Heat can easily escape through these minor damages, so it’s important to seal these as soon as possible.

– Loose Fill Insulation – Loose fill insulation comes in two forms; cellulose, which is fiber paper, and fiberglass. This is mainly used in attics that have damages that are too difficult to reach.

Having sustainable insulation is considered to be a lifesaver for many homeowners who have utility bills that are out of this world.

Use Solar Panels

No home can truly go green without adding solar panels into the mix. Solar panels use the sunlight to provide your home with power. However, solar panels are a rather large investment and requires a great deal of thought. It’s important to remember that these aren’t exactly needed to make your home greener. However, they are a great way to save on electricity. In fact, you can even give electricity back to the grid and make money on top of it.

With so many options available, it is possible to build a green home that not only saves you money, but also helps to save the environment. But because the world is changing so quickly, unfortunately in ways we can’t control, it’s up to you as a homeowner to do your part. And with so many viable ways to help save the environment, the best place to start is in your home.
